About the Author
Robert O’Byrne is one of Ireland’s best-known writers on architecture, fine art, and design. A former journalist with the Irish Times, he has written extensively on the country’s historic houses and their decoration. Among his previous books are Romantic Irish Homes, Romantic English Homes, and Luggala (also published by CICO Books). The Irish Aesthete (theirishaesthete.com and @the.irish.aesthete on Instagram) was begun as a means of sharing Robert’s interest in Ireland’s architectural heritage with a wider audience. He is based in County Meath, Ireland.

Robert O Byrne's new book " Ruins of Ireland" offers a melancholic and sometimes indignant account of diverse Irish relics which have never before been curated in book form. Astonishing Medieval castles ,defiantly robust, rub shoulders with once elegant Georgian mansions, eaten alive by the rapacious appetite of Ivy. Solemn and alone, these abandoned ruins were rarely built as comfortable homes but more often than not as statements of political or clerical clout and consequently suffered at the hands of rebels, many of them being burnt by the I.R.A.in the 1920,s. One can examine the distance between the image of the Grand house and the social oppression they represented, versus the cold and damp conditions for the inhabitants of these mostly unmanageable edifices ;chilblained chamber -maids and bucolic butlers desperately trying to keep fires lit for some semblance of comfort, as often these inheritors were born into high houses with low incomes, who with no support from private wealth or the State were forced to relinquish once impressive estates. Robert's honest photography ,accompanied by many wry anecdotes, illustrate his righteous outrage at the State's disregard for preserving Irish Architectural History, an indifference unique to this country. These ruins stand testament to Ireland's complicated and turbulent past and this book offers a fascinating insight into their wretched history.
