Although just as budget-oriented as a Let's Go Travel guide -- "Around the World with Jet Lag Jerry" is more akin to Laurence Sterne's classic "Sentimental Journey through France and Italy." In this series kickoff, as you go bobsledding down the Great Wall of China, perusing potato chip flavors (from blueberry to hotpot), or getting a guided tour from a toothless rickshaw driver speaking a language you can't understand, the singular voice of Gerald Hansen resonates throughout. Though an experienced traveler, Hansen is the polar opposite of world-weary in his enthusiastic and idiosyncratic take on Modern China and its ancient monuments. Great preparation for a journey, but no ticket necessary. For this short, lively, volume is a trip in itself!
Amazingly fun read with the down and dirty and the toddler split pants. Enjoying the passage about the hutong pedicab ride alone was worth the price of the book. Alas, I will probably never be able to afford the $2,799 National Geographic Tour to Beijing, so Gerald’s book is much more accessible for armchair travelers like me. Gerald does have the gift of conjuring up his own adventures. Thank you for sharing. Can’t wait for the next experience!
Perfect length to whet your appetite for your own visit. Good sense of humor and adventure. Looking forward to reading his other books.
This travelogue is full of informative, insightful facts about the city of Beijing and yes, the Great Wall of China. When Gerald wrote about the part where he ran down the sidewalk and around a corner because the pedicab driver was asking him for 300 yuan (he had originally told Gerald "three,") and Gerald was running because he only had 50 yuan in his pocket! What great fun this was to read!!
An insightful, sometimes irreverent romp through modern China, with a focus on the Great Wall. My regular traveling companion and I want to go to Beijing, and of course we want to see the Great Wall. This book gave us a lot to think about, and had us both laughing out loud. I don't know if we'll make it there, but Jet Lag Jerry gave us a taste for the country and the culture, exploring not only the exciting hidden alleyways, but also the expected tourist destinations. A fun read.
