I read this book a few months back and then opened it up again last evening and re-read it. I must say it was as riveting the second time around as it was the first time. The blurb does an excellent job of laying out the storyline but I wanted to add a few thoughts of my own relative to the relationship between Ranulf and Gwenllian. She's quite amazing and it defies imagination that she could actually fight in the manner she fought - as an equal against men. Sure, we've heard of female warriors, but believe me when I say Gwenllian, Is. A. Female. Warrior. In fact, she can best all her men and they follow her willingly as not only their leader, but also as their battle leader.However, Gwenllian's first love is her craft of herb lore and this is how we are introduced to her as she works to heal Ranulf who was injured by her men. Another interesting fact about Gwenllian is that she's half pretty and half ugly. Her eyes, eyelashes and lips are to die for, but otherwise she's unattractive. She's also described as broad shouldered and slim like a boy. When her identity is first revealed to Ranulf in her role as "one of the men" - the setup by Elizabeth Kingston and the eventual reveal is simply off the charts.In truth, Ranulf is demeaning to Gwenllian once he learns who she is, speaking insulting words about her looks which later in the book cause him a fair amount of shame. Although Ranulf is one of Edward's men and has a reputation for being the King's butcher, sad events have driven Ranulf since he was a young boy. One could say he is in desperate need of inner healing so he can be made whole. By the time we are introduced to Ranulf, he's on a journey of sorts to try and figure it out. Does he want to live or die? That seems to be the question. After being injured and captured by Gwenllian's men, Ranulf actually hopes to die but once he realizes who has captured him and why - the old fight kicks back in.Gwenllian is the product of her mother's manipulation and her own shattered dreams. As a young woman she was promised to a powerful lord and grew up associating her future life as his wife and inheritor of his lands. But, he is murdered in his bed by his young ward, so her hopes and dreams were shattered as well as her mother's. They have long since had a complaint in to King Edward to regain the promised lands. When Ranulf lands in their hands, they plan to use him as a tool to get what they believe to be theirs.The most interesting thing to me as a reader about Gwenllian is that although she feels ungainly, ugly, mannish and everything unfeminine, she is passionate enough to allow herself to become physically involved with Ranulf although up to this point he has done nothing but put her down. On Ranulf's part, he obviously feels some wild attraction to her which in the end seems to be the glue that holds them together and plays a huge part in what eventually turns into true love. A riveting story set the late 13th century during a time when kingdoms were being built and lost, wars were being waged and battles fought, families were being united by convenience - rarely love. I've long been a lover of stories about Wales, Scotland and Ireland. If I could be transported back in time and spy from a safe spot in the sky, I think I would choose these countries and this time period for my fantasy trip.
I've been passing by this title for a few weeks now, and out of sheer bordeom at work I finally went on ahead and reviewed the sample. A brain-gasm ensued and immediately I threw my money at amazon to finish devouring it.This is a gem one would find in a haystack filled with the same plots same cookie cutter H/h/villian.I actively search to find unique heroes and heroines. So we got a murderous assassin who is remorseful and has a really messed up background, (nice!) a homely-no-really-she-isnt-beautiful-at-all heroine (Loving it!), small, but excellent swordplay scenes, a couple of compelling secondary characters (Suzanne, while u did not stay long u made me go awww), klingon-style love scenes and the antagonist with a very human and loving side....just only tiniest bit of evil. (oh ok... I can deal with cha).I definitely want to read more from this talented writer. It is so refreshing see a someone knock it out of the ballpark like she did on this one. The editing was on point, the dialogue was phenomenal, the characters very so well developed and perfectly imperfect (get it?). If this is the start of whats to come from her books, I'm more than willing to continue throwing my money at this exceptional author.
Elizabeth Kingston writes with emotional and psychological intensity. When the hero (Ranulf) first appears, he's a tortured soul, fully willing to give up everything for some measure of forgiveness. Kingston hits us squarely with his torment. Think of Ranulf as the guy at work whom the boss always picks to hand out termination notices . . . only Ranulf's boss is King Edward, and the termination notices come at the end of Ranulf's sword. So from the start, it's clear this is a guy with complicated loyalties. He's the King's Man, yes, but he's also going to great lengths to avoid the king.The heroine (Gwenllian) also has conflicting loyalties, although that only becomes evident as the novel progresses. What I liked best about this novel is that it wasn't the typical play between hero and heroine of animosity, grudging respect, lust, and love -- oh, there's plenty of that, but that's not what the novel's about. It's about how Ranulf and Gwenllian deal with their shifting roles, and ultimately how they resolve the very thorny problem of diametrically opposed loyalties. Kingston pulls this off with a believable and satisfying conclusion. And along the way, there's loads of fun swordplay and bitch-slapping and nasty nasty sex. I may be misremembering the bitch-slapping. I'm not misremembering the sex.Kingston thrives in the action sequences and dialog. Her descriptive passages are brief and to the point, thank God. Her characterization rocks. Gwenllian, I think, edges out Ranulf in complexity. She's not a cookie-cutter Amazon princess; she fought like hell to become who she is, and she has to continue to fight almost daily to maintain her men's respect. And then (in a scene that was a surprise to me, but I'm slow) everything in her life shifts. It's really fascinating watching her deal with her own shifting identity as she morphs from leader of men to lady of the household. Her trade-offs are truly sad; she can't be it all. She knows it's a rare thing that she even had a choice, since she narrowly escaped getting married off to a brutal creep when she was barely pubescent. Instead, she had the option to become remarkable.So: cool book. Well written. Fast paced. Lots of sex and swordplay. Lots of psychological drama. Damn good romance with a satisfying HEA. Maybe not enough bitch-slapping. Kingston, you've been warned.
