About the Author
Thomas Pavitte, born in New Zealand, is a graphic designer and experimental artist who often uses simple techniques to create highly complex pieces, and whose dot-to-dot pieces have been enjoyed by people all over the world. He set an unofficial record for the most complex dot-to-dot drawing in 2011 with his version of the Mona Lisa, in 6,239 numbered dots, which took him weeks to prepare and nine hours to complete. I just have to say that I am totally in love with Querkles! I've bought all four books, and this author is amazing! If you are a creative type who loves adult coloring books, but also enjoys using your left brain for mind bending puzzles, then this is definitely the right fit for you. It is so much fun to start out with a bunch of random circles and end up with a masterpiece. I've used markers and colored pencils, and both turned out equally good (pictures are attached). I think it strictly comes down to personal preference, and I like to alternate what I use. I will say that I enjoyed the Animals and Masterpieces books the most because the Cats and Icons books get a little repetitive (cat after cat vs. person after person). I prefer being surprised by my work in progress, and hope that the author makes more books with a greater variety in the future. The perforated pages make it easy to share with others, and everyone I've shown these to has gotten themselves hooked and went on to order their own books. Give it a shot - I promise, you won't be disappointed!HINT: If you are going to use markers, I suggest starting with the lightest color first, and gradually working to the darkest. For instance, color all the 5's, then all the 4's, and so on till you get to all the 1's. This will prevent the darker colors from bleeding and give you crisper lines. I have attached a series of pictures so that you can see the process.
I originally started with the Masterpieces and Icons books but my eleven year old daughter fell in love with them too so I purchased the animal and cat books for her. We color together almost every single night. I think the animal book is slightly "easier" than the others because the circles are a little bigger and more spread out. Here are my daughter's animal Querkles. We love the Prismacolor soft core pencils.
I love coloring, and the fact that I am NOT an artist, I especially like books were much of the thought about "how can I make this look good" is decided for me.The idea behing this book is that every page can be colored in any color you choose - it really can! It reminds me of Andy Warhol and his colored photos of Marilyn Monroe. I could get three of these books and color the same dog oraange, green, purple, red, and blue. Each coloring experience is fun.What I strongly recommend is that you use your color selection based on scribbling on pracrice paper. You need 5 colors that are condidered dark to light. This can be like black, navy blue, forest green, true red, and yellow. Black would be the least transparent, and the yellow thebmost transparent. The numbers 1 - 5 are printed darker and lighter within the circle parts to show you the effect. This color combo will make an interesting animal (or for the other books, some crazy looking people). The book also recommends using shading with pencil or pen, or picking within a color group, such as the green dog pictured by a reviewer. Use a black, forest green, true green, grass green, and lime or spring green as your lightest. I ALWAYS try my pencils and markers on scrap paper first.The paper in the book is like a 65lb or 70lb paper, or thin cardstock. You can use marker, watercolor (if you do not go to wet), acrylic pain, ink, pastels, crayons...the sky is the limit with heavy paper.Each piece can be removed so that the artist can work on a clip board, or at a drafring table/easle , and not have to fight the book. I like this part since I am a reposing artist. 😊These books are great fun, and I believe the animal ones make great starter books. I am not comfortable making a purple shaded Mona Lisa, but a purple Camel is okay by me.
VERY inexpensive book, oversized, and fun!A friend sent me my first color by number book for my birthday and I thought, "Really?". Once I opened my first I was pleasantly surprised. I use gel pens, staedtler pens, as well as stabilo pens in these books and the outcome is amazing! Stabilo pens do leave a shadow on the back page when using darker hues.For this, you pick only 5-colors from dark to light and start. It's best to fill in all of one number first and as you move to the next the image hidden within will appear. I love that I don't need to worry about shading, can use a different medium (pens as I use only colored pencils), and it's fun to see what the image will be. I don't look at the back at all.It's possible to color the same image again using a completely different color scheme after the purchase of another book which is what I did. Something I really like is that these books limit me to only 5 color choices and without looking, I break away from the use of the colors which are true to the image I'm coloring. Something much more unexpected as I tend to like to color images that match nature. Great therapy book!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE these books..do wish they had more books available with less animals and people and more scenery or landmarsk would be nice.i love that these allow me to turn my mind off due to you choose just 5 colors..after that its just looking for the number and coloring...very meditative for me. they are a bit complex and small which i also like..i love not having any idea of that it is i am "coloring" until the picture reveals its self enough ...)you can look at the back to see if you would rather know) i love seeing what crazy colors i choose come together in a finished work. these do take a good amount of time as well due to the size and amount of small spaces to fill inji do love the quality of paper and size is large...great books just need more with subject matter!
I am a 60+ woman that likes puzzles, word games, etc. and have always liked to color so I just want to say that I really enjoy doing the Querkles. I do not look at the pictures before coloring so it is neat to see the image come to life. If you like the adult coloring books I think you would enjoy this also. Just use 5 shades...from dark to light and let the animals appear!!
