Went through this book with my children's ministry pastor (I'm the pastor in charge of all education) by recommendation from a friend of mine who is a children's ministry pastor. We both absolutely loved the book. Straightforward and practical while going much deeper than I had expected.Highly recommend for all people in children's ministry!
While focused on youth ministry, Dan clearly illustrates that discipleship is not an “instructor-to-student†relationship, but rather a continuing conversation in which the Holy Spirit is engaged with the participants. The Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20) is an invitation into the eternal opportunity join with others to know God. This is a call to all who claim the name and leadership of Jesus, not just those engaged in youth ministry.
Good advice, some practical steps to take. Relationship: ours with God, leaders with God, ours with leaders, leaders with kids, ours with kids, kids with God. Repeat. It’s like the cycle of Grace.
Well written, plenty of personal accounts and humor. A must read for folks who long for real connection with someone else's kids or one's own.
Good insights, was hoping for more practical steps to take.
A must read for "kid-influencers" everywhere!
I enjoy the book. It's an interesting read and has a lot of good stories. It starts out with a lot of statistics. Then it goes into stories that jump from one place to another then a section of a few ways to do/solve this, then a few more stories, then... It has a direction, but it just kinda meanders there in an easy-going manner. Then it has a lot of info that would be good for starting any ministry of a church and wouldn't apply to just children's ministry. It very often shows two or more sides of a story. Mostly it doesn't say do this because it works, but it says to find what works and do it. There aren't a lot of specific ideas (other than an epilogue on Awana), but there are a lot of nebulous ideas.I think this book can take someone who thinks their children's ministry is in a rut and get them excited about putting some fire back in that ministry, but I don't I think this stops short at really showing you how to do that because it wants you to find your own way and method. It's really more of a call to action that an action plan.It think that's a strength in that it's a good call to action. But I think it's a weakness in that after reading this I don't know where to go next.
When I first started reading this book, I felt like it was going to be more appropriate for bigger children ministries than the one I participate in, like full time daycare Bible programs and all. I help teach a 2 and 3 year old Sunday morning Bible class(before worship service, NOT during!!). I also have 3 little ones. It turns out that there's all kinds of little nuggets of wisdom within the pages, no matter what age or type of children's program you are involved in."What do you do to equip kids to wrestle with faith instead of spoon-feeding them snippets of God's story?" (page 70)"We typically focus on two immediate questions. Do kids remember what was covered? And are they getting along, sitting quietly, and paying attention? But discipleship is far more than memorizing facts and paying attention to the teacher. In fact, when these two questions drive the conversation, a child's capacity to engage with God is actually diminished." (page 117) (This is something I really needed to hear!)There's a great deal of "food for thought" in this book, and it has definitely gave me plenty to think on and change.
