Tara A. Devlin studied Japanese at the University of Queensland before moving to Japan in 2005. I'm always a little skeptical when picking up self-published books from Amazon, but I was pleasantly surprised with Toshiden. The book is made up of a lot of tales I'd heard about myself while living in Japan, as well as a few new ones that I hadn't. I'm a big collector of folklorist reading from Asia, and I'm happy to add this affordable option to my collection. From what I've seen, there isn't really any other book currently out in English that focuses so heavily on modern day urban legends.My only gripe would be that I think the author may want to invest in an editor. There are quite a few grammatical errors throughout the book, mistakes that are simple overlooks, but nothing that really pulls away from the writing itself.
This book is INSANELY BRILLIANT!! I'd like to consider myself an active Japanese urban legend/yokai/occult/cryptozoologist enthusiast...... but holy cow.... this book has soooooooo many urban legends I've NEVER EVER heard of! Its impeccable! If you want to stay cool this summer, (chill your bones with scary stories) then BUY this book. It's so fascinating and it breaks down the legends pretty damn well: orgins, both modern and from the past..... what to do to save yourself in case you get caught up with it, variations of the urban legends..... etc. A must read for any one with a healthy appetite for scary urban legends!

Ever since seeing Ringu and following it up with such movies like the Grudge and television series like Tales of Terror from Tokyo, Scary True Stories, etc, I have looked for a source of Japanese Urban Legends. Unfortunately, most I could ever find, were internet sources and books revolving around Yokai and Yurei. While some these books did touch upon modern legends, they were mainly concern with older tales. So it was to my great surprise and joy, that I discovered Tara A. Devlin’s Toshiden. The book touches upon some well-known legends like Kuchisake-Onna and Hanako of the Toilet as well as some lesser known stories. Beyond the supernatural, it touches on other legends lin chapters about medical, entertainment, crime and jokes. The book is easy to read and is very informative. I am looking forward to reading any further volumes of this book.
I have long enjoyed urban legends. Each of the stories are short, and I appreciated this book because it is researched well.The author tracks down the origins and shares different versions of the stories. Japanese urban legends are particularly interesting, because most of them come with "rules," for escape or best possible outcome. Luck favors the prepared, so in the event you find yourself in one of these situations... I'd rather have read the book and know the best response than not (smile).I had always known Japanese culture to very rule oriented, but who knew it even found its way into the superstitious.
The stories in this were SUPER creepy, well-written, and well-researched. Teketeke, Sugisawa Village, and Hikiko-san were my favorites -- the kinds of stories that will keep me up at night. I loved reading all the different regional variations of the stories. I also found it fascinating that some of the urban legends were sort of a mix of the others.Also, the stories were accessible and easy to understand. Going in, I was worried I'd feel lost, since I have absolutely zero background in Japanese culture and language, and have never been there. But I didn't!A great, creepy read!
Toshiden is a wonderful addition to the urban legend books compiled and published by Tara. I personally want to learn as much as I can about Japanese culture and I love Japanese horror. So this is one of my favorite books, okay the whole series is. I love reading these stories and learning knew things. Some of them are scarier than others, but overall they're a great read.
Amazing book, the author does a great job in going in depth with each legend, and adding a splash of sarcasm and humour every now and then that helps make it more memorable. Honestly, after reading this, I kind of want a physical copy now...
