I love love LOVE the emphasis here on meetings as a design challenge. It's so true, and Kevin Hoffman does a great job of making that clear. And, because it's a design challenge, he brings in some fascinating research on how to design successful user experiences (in this case, meeting experiences) that will help everyone put together better meetings. The research is fascinating and the guidelines useful, but I think I found the interviews to be the most compelling part of the book. Meeting design is complex stuff, and seeing the stories of people who've found ways to tackle specific meetings well is incredibly helpful. I'll keep a copy of this book near my desk as a reference for years to come.
I was a technical reviewer for this book, and I used to work with the author, Kevin Hoffman, years ago.Kevin was the first person to teach me how to run a successful meeting. I’ve used those meeting skills ever since. I’ve moved many projects forward by leading a structured discussion or a workshop, all thanks to the foundational soft skills Kevin taught me.I believe Kevin's book can help you become more effective at meetings as well. It’s exciting to see how far the book progressed since I reviewed the manuscript a while back. My favorite takeaways from the book include:1. While in a meeting, you can write down visible, short notes of what the meeting attendees discuss. Do this on a whiteboard or on a large sheet of paper. This visual recording helps people remember what was said and helps them move the conversation forward in a productive way. This is an easy, yet powerful technique you can use to improve frustrating meetings.2. You can make large meetings (10 or more people) more effective by breaking attendees into small groups. Those groups can hold discussions or engage in activities. Then, you have everyone reconvene as a larger group. Kevin explains more about how to do this in chapter 3.3. To lead a remote meeting effectively, you’ll need to use different techniques you don’t typically need when all meeting attendees are in the same location. Kevin gives some great tips for remote meetings in chapter 4.4. You can run a post-mortem meeting using a diagram of things that went well and things the team can improve. I had never heard of this post-mortem structure until I read the book. I look forward to trying it out at the end of my next project. (See chapter 9 for more details on how to do this.)Thanks to Kevin, I’ve learned to lead effective meetings and workshops. Kevin taught me skills I will use for the rest of my career. This book can give you a foundation in those invaluable skills. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did!
I rarely can say that a book immediately and effectively changed my life, but this one did.Not only is “Meeting Design†a quick and easy read, I was able to immediately implement steps that made my freelance work and work life better.Let me set the scene: Things have been tense lately with you and a colleague. Neither one of you has been able to fully articulate what’s going wrong, which means you sure don’t know how to fix it.By implementing the processes listed in “Meeting Design†I turned this entire situation around almost overnight.Instead of going into our next meeting by the seat of my pants, I set an agenda, complete with what I had accomplished, what I had on deck, and any questions I had. By adhering to this very simple format (simple but not necessarily easy), our relationship instantly improved. It completely changed our dynamic. My colleague felt heard, understood, and got what she needed, and so did I.This book has not only improved our meetings and communication, but it’s improved my own workflow tenfold. I’m able to adapt to the needs of our client much faster, I’m better organized, and my project list no longer feels like an overwhelming mountain that I’ll never get through.Kevin, from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU.I received this book as an ARC (advanced reader copy). I could not be more ecstatic with an ARC, and I'm buying copies for everyone I know.
If you are a) ready to change the way you meet and b) would like grounding in both theory along with practical examples, Hoffman's book just might be your ticket. He taps into the fundamentals of meeting design and facilitation, uses cases and examples to good effect, brings in other voices in short stories from practitioners and, what really caught my eye, was thinking about "beginning meetings," "middle meetings" and "ending meetings." I appreciated the patterns he elicited through these three "buckets." I would add, there are also approaches that drive more power and control into the hands of participants and yes, we can build capacity towards self facilitation. So use this for liftoff and then add more to your repertoire.
I am an User Experience Consultant and my life is full of meetings. With or without need, I have to be at all those meetings.Meeting Design - I thought what I am going to learn from this simple straightforward book. But this book literally taught me how effectively I can balance my time at office.Kevin is intelligent and his meeting design strategy changed my entire perception. Honestly now I will be more productive than before. Hereafter I am going to design my meetings and facilitations more effectively by putting the principles I learned from this book.Thank you Kevin for giving this brilliant book on much needed topic :)Dont miss this real gem :)
