While at times very dense and dry, this is a very important text in understanding the Lgbt movement in Singapore and why it has developed in the way it has. I applaud Chua's work and hope it will be an important seminal text for those who want to understand the movement in years to come. Of course things are evolving so fast she could start revising and adding a great to it with the events of the last year! The middle chapters which chronologically trave the movement are by far the most interesting. For a lay reader, or someone with little interest in academic texts, these are the chapters to read, leaving the rest to the side.I would love to see those middle chapters expanded even further. I'd love to see how Kumar, or Wild Rice figure into th movement. There is mention of Alfian Sa'at's plays, but not a larger discussion of them or the other ways in which theater and the arts have contributed to the increase in Gay Rights acceptance as an example.I would also have liked to see a chapter devoted to the anti-gay movement in SG rather than painting them as more fringe than they are.The author discusses pragmatic resistance, but it is also true that her own book carefully walks a line. The role of the MDA and the choices made by that body when regulating tv and movie content is downplayed. There is a careful line walked with dissection of the role of the government and the choices made by that body.
