About the Author
Elizabeth McMillian is a writer and an art and architectural historian. She is a former landmarks commissioner in Santa Monica, and former president of the Southern California Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians. She holds a Ph.D. in art history from the University of Southern California and was architectural editor at Architectural Digest from 1982 to 1992. She also wrote California Colonial for Schiffer Publishing (2002).

It was probably predictable that, after New York, Los Angeles would be the home to the second largest number of remarkable Deco and Moderne buildings. All the ingredients came together in a couple of decades in the last century: a host of creative Europeans who emigrated to southern California; a pleasant climate; plenty of land; individuals and companies who had the vision to go for something new and different. Elizabeth McMillian pulls all these strands together for a reasonably interesting read, though most of it could be found in Gebhard and Von Breton's Los Angeles in the Thirties or L A Deco by Carla Breeze.The book unfortunately has some dreadful editorial flaws. McMillian knows her subject but she is no architectural photographer. She took many of the color photos and they are really no better than snaps. Shadows abound all over the place, foliage and street furniture obstruct parts of buildings, color quality varies and the compositions and cropping are abysmal. All this is so noticeable because there are several photos by Tim Street-Porter who has been covering LA for years and knows how to take a decent architectural photo.To fill the pages several buildings have repeat photos: the top of the Eastern Building is on page sixty-three in color and again on ninety-five in mono. The Sunset Tower has six color photos (by the author) just showing the same thing but spread over four pages with another repeated elsewhere in the book. Neutra's lovely Beard House has two large color photos on pages forty-six and seven with part of one repeated large on page eighty-five.The biggest turn-off with the book, for me, was the presentation, or lack of it. Well considered text and headline typography, layout and other fundamental elements that make book reading a pleasure are missing from these pages. The publishers, Schiffer (whose books always look like they are in a fifties time-warp as far as design is concerned) churn out books for the collecting market, where they encourage collectors of Fostoria glass, Christmas cards or beer signs to photograph their collections on the kitchen table, bundle up all the snaps and publish them. For this readership layouts are probably not too important but McMillian's book is aimed at people who could well buy books published by Taschen, Rizzoli or Phaidon. I doubt any of these publishers would dare put out a book that looks as scrappy as this one. Oh, and it doesn't even have an index, how unprofessional is that. Because of all of this I think the book is really over priced and hardly worth bothering with.Fortunately there are several other books that look at LA deco delights, all professionally produced titles full of well-taken photos and they are a pleasure to look through. I've mentioned two but check out Deco LAndmarks: Art Deco Gems of Los Angeles,Kesling Modern Structures: Popularizing Modern Design in Southern California 1934-1962,Rudolf M. Schindler (Big Series Art) and American Art Deco: Modernistic Architecture and Regionalism this last book covers all of the US but has a long photo section on California.
The book has been an excellent resource for my journey of discovery of Los Angeles' architectural treasures. Martin Schall (you-are-here.com) and I spent a couple of days hunting down art deco in Los Angeles last fall; the book was a handy resource.
