i purchase the book for a 525i BMW. If you are doing very simple maintenance things such as changing oil the book is fine. However it is very difficult to follow when doing something like removing rack and pinion. Items listed in the appendix often is not covered in the same area they are listed but somewhere else. The worst part is steps are skipped and certain key things are left out of tear down and removal of parts. I had to figure out or use utube to remove several parts myself. I own several Haynes manuals and have always use them to do any repair on my cars without any complications. This is the first repair manual i have owed that i cant use.
This manual is definitely worth the investment, as it goes into great detail on each step required for a given task. Unfortunately, it did not go as far as I would have liked on engine tear downs, and stopped at the top end section. I was unable to find any sort of reference for torque specifications or color coding on things like main bearing bolts or crank shaft spacers. Still, a worthwhile investment. I would argue the manual tells you about 80-90% of everything you would ever need to know, and what it doesn't tell you is often reserved for very unique circumstances and specialty shops; i.e, they don't expect you to want to rebuild an entire engine with this book, but you could service the top end.
This is a high quality 2-volume hardbound set of books. Excellent photographs and narrative for doing everything from routine maintenance to the most complex jobs. I am a low level weekend mechanic, but I have tackled some jobs like oil and filter changes, resetting the service indicators, and with theses books I am feeling confident enough to tackle some bigger jobs.
The BMW 5 Series Service Manual is a beautiful, hardback, two volume set. They are mostly black & white with some color. They measures approximately 8 ½" by 11" and 3" thick. The set is expertly formatted with cross references and indexes. The amount of information is staggering. I wish I had bought these books, or similar, with my 525xi in 2006. My first thought was the service manual was a bit pricey, but when you consider the quality of the books and information they are worth it.
Found it useful several times already for my N54 2008 535i. Even for basic things like complete coolant flush, power steering fluid flush, brake and oil change. To very involved things like swapping big parts in and out. It is very detailed, thorough and well illustrated. Two volume books is also nice quality. Top shelf book for DIY e60 owner and fanatic.

Purchased this for my husband, an amateur mechanic, who has worked on his vehicles for decades. He was thrilled! Been browsing for the last few weeks. Very thorough, easy to understand (if you speak "car") and overall a hit.
Does not include how to change the a/c compressor. The whole reason why we bought the book. Otherwise it in is great detail and an asset to own.
