In Pond's autobiographical Over Easy, Madge left art school in the late 1970s and started waitressing at Oakland's Imperial Cafe. Where the first volume was a look at the characters she worked with and waited on, the sequel is grittier, the darker content belied by the pale turquoise and white watercolor illustrations. As the narrative moves into the 1980s, the hedonistic drug experimentation turns to the dangerous realities of dealing and overdosing. Madge struggles with the deaths of friends, unwanted pregnancy, and teenage runaways, and she worries about becoming stuck at the Imperial as she becomes a player in the drama instead of sardonically observing from the sidelines. Familiarity with the first volume is essential, as Pond does not provide context for the large cast of characters. VERDICT A realistic and moving look at what happens when the veneer wears off and the party goes on too long. I first "met" Mimi Pond when she first started appearing in the National Lampoon. In those days, I sought out all the cartoon magazines that I could, such as Punch and The New Yorker. It was the next step up from Mad Magazine and I got to recognize her cartoons, the way I recoganized Shary Flenniken, who did Trots and Bonnie in the same publication.Since then, I have followed her work, as best I could, and was happily surprised when she published her memoir of her time working as a waitress through, or rather after art college Over Easy.I didn't know there was more to tell, until she came out with this latest, the second part of her story, of her time as a waitress, while she tried to establish herself as a cartoonist. This wraps up her story nicely, and shows that the world of restaurants, and easy drugs, and what happens to all the people in the first book.You don't have to have read the first book to understand what is going on, in fact it has been three years since the first book came out, and I didn't bother to reread it before I dived back into it, although, once I did finish it, I went back to reread Over Easy again.If you have liked Mimi Pond in the past, if you have read her other books, well, this is really nothing like them, although the humor is there. Here she is examining a time in her life, where she is running around, with what we used to call a "bad crowd". She is young, on her own, and trying to escape Oakland, after having escaped San Diego, to get her career on track to being a cartoonish.It is a hefty book, coming in at nearly 500 pages, but the story needs those pages to be there, to see what was happening, to tell her version of what happened, thought as she says, she has moved things around, to make a better story.Would recommend this to everyone, to those who want to be cartoonists, to those who have been in the service industry, to those who have eaten at restaurants, and to those who know how Oakland was in the '70s.

Mimi Pond is a wonderful story teller and gifted artist. The Customer is Always Wrong continues the story of Madge when she worked at the Imperial Cafe. If your like me you won't put the book down until your finished. Like all young people Madge meets people on her jouncy who teach her life's lessons. Read this book, you won't be sorry.
Mimi Pond, thanks for going Over Easy with us on your previous graphic novel. This was a little darker. A little more life sucks, still funny, and with the door wide open for a new beginning as your career takes off, and I can't wait! Once again, I apologize that I read this almost start to finish realizing what it must have taken for you to ink every page. If it's any consolation I went back through to realize all the funny asides in the backgrounds of your drawings...just couldn't put it down.
I hate that it's over, I am not done with Madge!!! I have loved her through "Over Easy" and now "The Customer is Always Wrong"and I WANT MORE. The story was is so well-developed and full, I feel like when I wake up tomorrow, I need to check in with these people. Also, Mimi's renderings of local store signs and landmarks are so right on it took me back in time and space beyond the story itself, having grown up in the area. What a perfect use of this medium and what a story. I just love it.
Mimi Pond has just entered my pantheon of admirable female graphic memoirists with the clear-eyed humor and heart-felt storytelling that keeps the pages turning in "The Customer is Always Wrong." Supported by lively and approachable panels, the author shares pivotal stories of her early twenties as she work to get her feet under her before taking off for her successful NYC based career as a humorist and cartoonist for publications such as "National Lampoon," The Village Voice," and "The New York Times."While foregoing mention of the larger political or social tone of the times, Mimi captures the zeitgeist of Northern California in the mid to late 70s as she writes about the life of the cooks and waitresses who worked in the early days of the now venerable Mama's Royal Cafe in Oakland. The first third of the book is as guiltily satisfying as workplace gossip, at once pointedly funny and sometimes critical of the choices the author and others on the staff make in the realm of relationship and involvement with drugs. It is a touch disappointing that these pieces offer no real backstory that fleshes out the workers, but this is balanced against the middle and final arcs of the story as Mimi focuses on her shared experiences with the cafe's caring, generous, and poetic manager, Lazlo. The middle passage relates Lazlo's efforts to bring his troubled runaway fourteen year old daughter home, while the final third deals with illness and loss.I highly recommend this title to devotee of Mama's Royal Cafe, and readers who enjoy graphic memoirs, warm and funny stories about human foibles and writing on the challenges of working class people in daily life.
